Military Housing Philadelphia - Buildings begin to deteriorate quickly after being abandoned. Within a decade or two, paint begins to peel off the sheets, ivy tears at the brick and termites gnaw on the wood. Water, large infiltrators, leaves falling from the roof and floorboards rotting in the wake.
The recent vintage of Mustin Navy Yard area homes pictured here (built from the 1950s to the 1980s) demonstrate this truth. Most of the military personnel and their families left in 1996, and some remained in the house until 2000. Of course, time and nature helped - even an army of carpenter ants couldn't make holes in the concrete blocks when they were left behind. demolition and the SWAT team used the building for training.

There is something unpleasant about this scene of desertion and decay. They cannot be consigned to the safety of a distant past, like a crumbling 19th-century factory or a townhouse in a dilapidated urban neighborhood. Nor can it be easily romanticized, for the same reason. Formica countertops and brass chandeliers, street signs reminding children to play, garden chairs visible through sliding glass doors belong to an era that is still very much with us. This scene suggests the safety, prosperity and banality of post-war suburban life, and seeing them will be a reminder of the transitory nature of things.

The Mustin home is scheduled to be demolished Dec. 27, but that could be delayed if a bald eagle returns to nest on the property. What will be Pennsylvania's largest marine terminal — the state-funded South Harbor — is planned for the site.
